Greece: shipowners order 44% more vessels in Q1 31 May

Following the general trend noticed during this year in terms of newbuilding ordering activity — or rather setting it Greece- ship owners have pulled the trigger in 44% more orders during the first four months of the year, i.e. in the January-April period. The most remarkable is the 300% increase in container ship ordering by Hellenic-owned shipping companies, followed by a 67% boost in tanker orders and a more modest 33% increase in dry bulk carriers’ orders. According to data compiled by shipbroker Golden Destiny, as Balkans.com reports, «during the year to date, 56 orders are reported to have been placed by Greek investors, which are 16% lower than the volume of Chinese orders. Chinese presence appears stronger in the container segment with 12 new orders, liners with 5 new orders and special projects with 5 new orders», the Piraeus-based shipbroker said.

In total, across the globe, «there’s been a 35% increase in the number of new orders reported with a remarkable rebound in the volume of container’s newbuilding business. According to the report, 83 new orders for containers were reported in Jan-April 2013 from 10 last year. In the bulk carrier and tanker segments, the volume of new orders showed 49% and 93% respectively year-on-year increase in terms of deadweight ordered. In terms of newbuilding trends, bulk carriers represented significant rise for capesize newbuildings with investors ordering 54 new orders, from 12 in the first four months of last year.

Handy-handysize, ultramax and capesize ordering activity kept a high pace of newbuildings, up by 250%, 58% and 350% respectively from the ordering levels in Jan-April 2012» said the shipbroker.
