The Greek House is a narrative written by Christian Brechneff, about a man and his thirty-year love-affair with the island of Sifnos, to be released today (June 11). Born in the Belgian Congo in 1950, Brechneff tells the story of how at twenty-one years of age, he was a painter in search of artistic inspiration, and came to Sifnos where he bought a house in a hilltop village. He describes the island from the day he arrived over three decades ago, when roads were scarce, to contemporary high-speed boats, the euro and tourists galore.
He narrates with warmth about the unforgettable residents and how the place became a haven from the complexities of his life. It is also the end of this love story – how the island changed and how he changed. His paintings show how he weaved himself into the life of the island, painting it year after year.
