The Look
It’s all location, location, location at the Hera Hotel, situated at the foot of the infamous Acropolis. The Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Athena Nike are all within easy reach, and the hotel has sweeping views of the sights from the suites to the rooftop restaurant. While its locale couldn’t be more Greek, those looking for marble columns and statues might be disappointed: The interiors are classic, contemporary and soothing. Think curved iron columns, a mahogany-clad reception area and elaborate floor designs.
Bed and Bath
Each of the 38 guestrooms is decorated in soft tones of sand, beige and gray, with comfortable linens and fluffy throw pillows. The attention to detail is meticulous. White orchids dress up spacious sitting areas, and in suites, verandas offer views of the Acropolis Park and the Acropolis Museum. Bathrooms are clad in marble and come with a bathtub or a separate shower.
Beyond
The on-site Peacock restaurant serves simple Greek fare using only natural and organic ingredients to create such dishes as chicken stuffed with gruyère, and sundried tomatoes with traditional Greek noodles. The bar has an excellent selection of wines and spirits, and the veranda at the Peacock is ideal year-round for an aperitif with friends as you gaze at the Acropolis and the Parthenon.
In the Area
Walk out the front door and you’re whisked straight back to classical Greece. Olive trees and old pines dot the ancient hillsides, which gently slope upward toward the monumental wonder of white rock that is the Acropolis. Nearby is the Acropolis Museum, as well as trendy areas packed with new fusion restaurants, such as the Gazi neighborhood — a nice complement to the traditional tavernas in Kolonaki. Visit the Benaki Museum for a look at Greek art through the millennia, not just from the classical era. Don’t miss stopping in for some handmade leather sandals at the shop of poet Stavros Melissinos, whose work is published worldwide and whose sandals have shod celebrities from Anthony Quinn to Jackie O.
