The Municipality of Hersonissos recently completed an original and impressive work using optical imaging technology and produced virtual tours (360 degrees) of the main points of interest of the city (archaeological sites, villages, churches, etc.).
The virtual tour is a composite of several photos which, with proper treatment and software create an image 360 ° x 360 °. Guests gain the ability to move the cursor in any direction they wish to see, to move to an adjacent space, make zoom at some point of interest and generally visit places virtually as many times as they wish.
Studies have shown that destinations that offer virtual tour receive a larger number of web visitors and highlight best their points of interest.
The Municipality of Hersonissos has created 73 different virtual tours so far, covering all Municipal Units of the Municipality, as well as all the experiences a guest could have such as caves, beaches, churches, archaeological sites, aquarium, nature etc. All virtual tours have been implemented on charts that make it easy for users to find each tour.
This action was carried out in cooperation with the company 360cities.net (the largest portal hosting virtual tours) with over 10,000 virtual tours around the world, 500 of them in Crete.
Through 360cities.net any business operating in the Municipality of Hersonissos has the possibility by copying a specific code to put one or all virtual tours on their corporate web site, at no cost.
The Mayor of Hersonissos Mr. Zacharias Doxastakis said: «This project was part of the program for Sustainable Tourism Development (VI.T.A.) through which the Municipality is trying to reshape the tourism product of the region, to exploit and to highlight cultural, historical and traditional elements in order to attract new visitors, investment and create new jobs.
