
This future projection is based on the fact that ten years ago, 4 and 5 star hotels accounted for only 25% of the country’s market share. Today, they account for 40%, therefore, making it thus possible that luxury hotels in a few years become the trend and not the exception in the Greek hospitality sector. Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni says the target is to create more infrastructure providing top notch facilities and amenities, such as golf courses, marinas, spas and conference halls.
According to the 2014 World Luxury Index Hotels, which includes the most sought after hotels, Athens ranks eighth in the key Mediterranean market. Moreover, the destination of Athens presented the highest rise (30%) in terms of consumer’s search. The most popular site of luxury tourism in Athens is its riviera, and mainly in its southern Vouliagmeni district.
